
In addition to these two and the two main characters, four other characters can be unlocked in the versus mode: Reptile, Kitana, Baraka, and Johnny Cage.

Sub-Zero and Scorpion can be unlocked as playable characters in the Ko-op mode. Special team attacks become available only in this mode as well as some areas and items. Several other characters appear in order to help, including Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, Jax and Raiden while many others must be defeated such as Goro, Reptile, Mileena, Kitana, Jade, and Baraka.Īlso included is a Ko-op mode where two players can work together to get through the game. In addition to Liu Kang and Kung Lao, there are characters for the player to unlock in both the co-op and versus modes. The game centers on Liu Kang and Kung Lao as they travel through the different realms in order to stop Shang Tsung. Unfortunately, the warriors are left stranded within Shang Tsung's crumbling island. Shang Tsung, Goro, and other enemies escape to Outworld while Liu Kang and Kung Lao, warriors from The Order of Light, are in close pursuit. The events of Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks takes place between Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II, with the opening scene of the game depicting the final moments of the first Mortal Kombat tournament. Experience points can be used to unlock new special moves, such as multiple fireballs for Liu Kang and unique hat-tosses for Kung Lao.Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. That said, you are rewarded with experience points based on how well you fight, so you'll want to keep the combos coming. Fighting baddies feels satisfying and easy-to-learn, so smashing skulls in Shaolin Monks doesn't require too much skill. You'll progress through linear levels, spread across both familiar and new locations within the Mortal Kombat universe, smashing through hordes of Shang Tsung's ghoulish army. Both characters have unique moves and abilities, mirroring their attacks and combos from the mainline Mortal Kombat games. The game can also be played cooperatively, with certain areas only accessible with two players. The game plays similarly to action titles like God of War, with players controlling either Kung Lao or Liu Kang. GameplayĪlthough Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is a spin-off title with its unique structure and gameplay, the combat will feel immediately familiar to fans of the series. In order to stop Shang Tsung and protect the world, Liu Kang and Kung Lao must journey across the land and brave the otherworldly horrors of Outworld. Upon arrival, the characters learn that Shang Tsung has begun a proper invasion of Earthrealm, attempting to conquer it despite the outcome of the tournament.


As the building around them begins to collapse, the pair head back to the Wu Shi Academy, led by their mentor and guardian of the Earthrealm, Raiden.

At the end of the first Mortal Kombat tournament, pandemonium breaks out as Liu Kang and the evil sorcerer Shang Tsung go head-to-head, ultimately ending in Shang Tsung's retreat. Shaolin Monks takes place directly after the events of the original Mortal Kombat, focusing on the two fighters Kung Lao and Liu Kang.
